Service requests

Ask for housekeeping, portering, transport or dietary help, and work the queue of what has been asked for.

01

What you can do here

This queue never names a patient

Say which bed or room a request concerns, in the words the ward uses. The people working this queue have no access to patient records, and a bed number is enough to do the job.

Whoever holds a request closes it

A request assigned to somebody else cannot be marked done by you. A supervisor can close one on somebody's behalf, and the record shows that is what happened.

Starting is separate from being given it

A queue where everything sits at assigned tells a supervisor nothing about what is actually moving, so say when you start.

A request can be handed on

Shifts end. A request stuck with whoever went home is a request nobody does, so reassigning one that is already in progress is allowed.

One queue, every kind of request

Housekeeping, portering, transport, dietary, linen, waste, security and building maintenance all work the same way, so they are one queue with a filter rather than eight screens that drift apart.

Follow these steps

Ask for something

  1. Select Ask for something.
  2. Choose the kind of request and say in a line what is needed.
  3. Say where it is, and for transport where it is going to.
  4. Name the bed or room in the ward's own words. Do not name the patient.

Work the queue

  1. Open a request, choose who is doing it from the team, yourself included, and select Assign. Only people whose role lets them work a request are offered.
  2. Select Start when you begin.
  3. To hand a request on when your shift ends, open it, choose who is taking it over under Hand it on to, and select Hand it on. It is theirs to start.
  4. Select Done when it is finished, with a note if it helps.

Cancel a request

  1. Open it, write why in the note, and select Cancel the request.
  2. A reason is required, because the ward that asked needs to know what happened.

Helpful habits

  • Say what is needed in a line somebody can act on without ringing you back.
  • Mark urgent only when it is. A queue where everything is urgent is a queue with no priorities.
  • Close the request when the work is done, not at the end of the shift. A queue that lags is one people stop trusting.
  • Hand a request on rather than leaving it assigned to somebody who has gone home.

Tips

  • A transport request has to say where it is going to. Nothing else needs a destination.
  • If you cannot close a request, it is assigned to somebody else. Ask them, or close it on their behalf if that is your job here.
  • Finished requests leave the queue but are kept.
